We've Built Comfortable Lives, But Not Healthy Ones

Plants stay rooted. Animals move. That's one of the first biology lessons we learn as children. Yet today, we've designed a life where almost everything happens sitting down. Food reaches our doorstep, work happens at a desk, conversations happen on a screen, entertainment happens on a couch and travel happens in a seat. The body that evolved to move throughout the day now receives very few movement signals. Maybe we're not becoming metabolically weak because we're ageing. Maybe we're becoming metabolically weak because we're simply under-moved.

Movement Is Information to Your Body

Every time your muscles contract, they send biochemical signals called myokines, which communicate with your muscles, liver, brain, fat tissue and immune system. Walking, stretching, standing after prolonged sitting or taking a short walk after meals all tell your body that energy is required, circulation needs to improve and metabolism needs to stay active. Movement isn't just exercise; it's biological communication.

Add Sunlight, and Your Physiology Works Even Better

Now combine that movement with daylight and the effects multiply. Sunlight helps your skin synthesise vitamin D, while natural daylight entering your eyes regulates your circadian rhythm through the brain's master clock. This improves melatonin production at night, supports better sleep, regulates cortisol throughout the day and improves mood and recovery. Modern life has made us indoor people, but our physiology is still built around spending time outdoors.

Movement Regulates Hunger and Cravings

One thing I notice repeatedly is that the more sedentary someone's day is, the more random their cravings become. Long hours of sitting can dysregulate appetite hormones, reduce energy expenditure and make boredom feel like hunger. Regular movement helps maintain insulin sensitivity, improves glucose regulation and keeps hunger and fullness signals more stable. That's why people who move consistently often find that their appetite feels more predictable and cravings become easier to manage.

Sitting Is Also a Biological Signal

Your body is constantly collecting information from your environment. Movement tells your body to maintain muscle, improve circulation, produce energy and stay metabolically flexible. Prolonged sitting sends the opposite message. Over time, reduced muscle contractions slow blood circulation, reduce glucose uptake, lower energy expenditure and increase low-grade inflammation. This is one reason many people feel stiff, tired, mentally drained and metabolically slow despite exercising for an hour each day. One workout cannot completely override fifteen hours of sitting.

Your Muscles Talk to Your Metabolism

Every time you walk, your muscles increase their demand for energy. They begin pulling glucose out of the bloodstream through pathways that become more efficient with regular movement, improving insulin sensitivity even without intense exercise. Better blood flow also means improved oxygen and nutrient delivery to tissues. These benefits aren't simply because you've burned calories—they happen because your muscles are constantly communicating with your metabolism, telling your body to use fuel efficiently instead of storing it unnecessarily.

Your Brain Responds to Movement Too

Movement changes your brain chemistry as much as it changes your muscles. Regular walking and physical activity help regulate cortisol and adrenaline, preventing them from remaining chronically elevated during stress. At the same time, movement stimulates the release of serotonin and endorphins, improving mood, reducing anxiety and creating a greater sense of mental well-being. This is why a simple walk often helps you think more clearly or feel calmer. Your environment hasn't changed—your physiology has.

Walking Isn't a Fitness Trend

To me, walking isn't about closing activity rings, hoops, collecting step counts or following another fitness trend. It's one of the most fundamental things humans are biologically designed to do. Maybe modern humans aren't lazy. Maybe we've simply removed movement from everyday life and replaced it with convenience. Unfortunately, our biology hasn't evolved as quickly as our lifestyle has, and our bodies are paying the price for that mismatch.

Put One Foot in Front of the Other

Sometimes the most powerful health intervention isn't another supplement, another diet or another workout. It's simply putting one foot in front of the other, more often than we do today.
